As the ultimate arbiter of high fashion and editor-in-chief of US Vogue magazine, Anna Wintour is renowned for her exacting standards when it comes to deciding whose image graces the glossy front of the industry bible.
So the fashion world reacted with a mixture of shock and outrage this weekend when her April cover girl was revealed to be Kim Kardashian, a brash reality television star whose sartorial style was long scorned by the legendarily haughty Briton.
Kardashian is pictured in a white strapless Lanvin wedding gown, sporting a 15-carat diamond engagement ring, wrapped in the arms of Kanye West, her rapper fiancée who will marry her in May.
The Vogue cover follows a protracted and brazenly public campaign by West to make his future wife's long-cherished dream come true.
It is all the more striking as Ms Wintour previously made clear her disdain for all things Kardashian. Two years ago, she reportedly banned the reality star from the guest list for the Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala, the biggest night in the fashion calendar. [
